Art Gallery of Ontario
The Art Gallery of Ontario is the 10th largest art gallery in North America, with 486,000 sq. feet of exhibition space. I was founded in 1900 by a group of Toronto citizens, and has since grown to become home to over 38,000 works, dating from the 11th Century to today.
This is the perfect place to become familiar with Canadian art. Over half of the museum's collection is made up of art by Canadians, from ancient native works to the present. This collection includes works by Canada's premiere artists of the past and present, including Betty Goodwin, David Blackwood and Paterson Ewen. British Sculptor Henry Moore is also a prominent figure in this museum, which houses his largest public collection of works.
Many masterpieces of the world over can be seen here, with works by Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and Edgar Degas on display. The museum also houses an impressive contemporary gallery of established and emerging artists in Canada, the US and Europe.
A huge photography collection is also housed by the museum, with works by British, French, Canadian and American photographers on display. It also shows many of the astounding works of the 20th Century modernists, including many of Josef Sudek.
The Museum is also now in the process of a huge transformation, to create a more modern and cutting-edge building to house this astounding collection.
