Lake Ontario
Lake Ontario is the smallest of the great lakes, but still remains the 14th largest lake in the world. Its surface area covers 7340 sq. miles, and was named after the Iroquois word "Ontario", meaning "Beautiful Lake". The lake lies at the base of Niagara Falls, and access to the other great lakes can be gained through the Trent-Severn Waterway, as well as the Welland and Erie Canals. The shoreline of lake Ontario runs through both the province of Ontario and New York State.
The lake provides endless activities in its waters and shores. People from all surrounding areas flock to the lake in the summer months for swimming and water sports, as well as just lounging on the beach. There are numerous hiking trails and forests around the shores of the lake, making for excellent walks and camping. Lodges and cabins also speckle the shoreline, where visitors can experience the best of fishing, boating and other water activities.
