Toronto Arts
After dark activities in Toronto are plentiful and fun. The city boasts a thriving arts scene and is jam-packed with things to do. To get an up-to-date calendar of events while in the Toronto area, try picking up a copy of Toronto Life or The Globe and Mail.
Massey Hall is the leading venue for music, whether it be classical or your favorite rock band. For bigger acts the Molson Amphitheatre at Ontario Place is the main venue. The Hummingbird Center hosts many of the Ballets and Opera performances, and the Roy Thompson Hall is where you can see the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (
www.tso.on.ca) from September to June.
The National Ballet of Canada (
www.national.ballet.ca), the leading ballet company in the country, is based out of Toronto and has performances running throughout the year. The Canadian Opera Company (
www.coc.ca) is also worth seeing, as well as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
The City's theatre groups are the next best thing in North America to Broadway. The CanStage Company and
Tarragon Theatre are the city's leaders in drama, but for a more quirky and cutting-edge show try Buddies in Bad Times, a gay theater that also is home to a great bar and cabaret.
Toronto's live music scene is thriving with the city being home to many diverse acts, ranging from Rock, Country and Reggae to Soul, Jazz and Blues. Many bands, while not well known out of the city, have an extremely loyal following and are immensely popular in Toronto. Check the paper for shows happening during your trip, and be sure to arrive in good time: venues tend to fill up quickly.
